Hungarian stew, or even "gulyás" in Hungarian, go back to the 9th century when Hungarian guards, called "gulyás," prepped the food in huge cauldrons over available fires. In the beginning, it was a basic meat soup, but as time go on, it grew into the strong, paprika-spiced hash we recognize today.
